ISLAND LIFE: Piers, Bikes, Boats, Surfboards & Sea Caves
Wandering brings serendipity and peace to those who want to discover it.
Piers during a thunderstorm, surfers pulling off incredible moves during a sunset surf, cruiser bikes bringing thoughts of a simple life, boats quietly waiting in the bay, surfboards lined up, hidden caves waiting to be discovered. All wondrous to behold.

This pier is a hidden gem. I didn't even know there was a pier in this particular area of the island until I was on a ridge hike that overlooked it. Of course I had to hunt it down. I had to weave my way through streets and do quite a few u-turns at dead ends before I found it. I knew it would have to be a sunrise photo as the pier faced east. The evening before this moody sunrise picture was taken, I received a phone call from a friend. His truck was in the shop so he needed a ride to work at 4 AM. He worked at a golf coarse on the other side of the island and had to be there before sunrise. Lucky for me, he worked in the same area as the pier. This was the perfect opportunity to see what nature would show me. I wasn't sure if I would even get a picture due to heavy rain on the way there. I arrived just as first light started showing. I made my way down the beach and under the pier to the other side. The beach scene that unfolded took my breath away. The stormy deep blue rain clouds passing with the sunrise reflecting off the water made a haunting and powerful ocean picture of a Monsoon Morning.

For many, many years I would drive by this bay and admire all the row boats moored in the ocean. Many jaunty colored boats in shades of blue, red, yellow and green fill the view as you gaze across the water. This ocean scene always brings back childhood memories for me of weekends spent boating with my family. This particular yellow row boat is my favorite because it always made me feel so happy with it's bright splash of sunshine yellow.
One morning I was passing by the bay on my way to an art fair. I always carry my camera with me because part of the art of photography is simply being in the right place at the right time. There were puffy clouds floating over the bay reflecting on the ocean. The reflections paired with ripples on the water created amazing textures that set off my favorite boat. As the water lapped around my ankles, I could see that this ocean picture Sunday at the Bay would be a timeless peaceful water image. Vertical Divider

Hawaiian rainbows do exist under the reef in the Mermaid Cave. This amazing sea cave is only accessible at low tide. I had heard rumors of this special cave. Before the days of Instagram, everything was hidden. I admit I'm old school, to me the harder it was to find, the more special it was when I actually found it. It took some sleuthing before I found the Golden Ticket to this sea cave. There were many possible entrance holes in the reef from above in the area of the cave. I popped my head down a few times with a few false starts before I found the right entrance. I had to plan and watch the tides carefully because I didn't want to be caught in a strong current of the tide coming in while I was in the cave. When I first went down into the cave, the sun was behind a cloud. It simply took my breath away when the sun came out and shown through 'windows' in the cave ceiling! The colors are breathtaking, all the shades of the rainbow. I realized the vivid colors are caused by coral growing on the reef. The pebble beach was made by chunks of shells and rounded pieces of coral that rolled over and over becoming smooth in the ocean. I wanted to stay down there forever but sadly the tide started to come in and it was time to go. I felt so blessed to take this beach scene & ocean picture of The Mermaid Cave.
