The legend of the beloved Ō`hia Lehua tree continues on against the backdrop of the steam vents at Kilauea Volcano and tropical rain forest on the Big Island of Hawai`i. The flowers have been long revered to be used in hula dancer's haku lei or lei po`o (head leis). There is a beautiful legend in Hawaiian culture about this tree. Look below to read the story.

The legend of the `Ō`hia Lehua tree in Hawaiian culture says that one day Pele met a handsome warrior named `Ō`hia and she asked him to marry her. `Ō`hia however, had already pledged his love to Lehua. Pele was furious when `Ō`hia turned down her marriage proposal, so she turned him into a twisted tree. Lehua was heartbroken, of course. The gods took pity on Lehua and decided it was an injustice to have `Ō`hia and Lehua separated. They thus turned Lehua into a flower on the `Ō`hia tree so that the two lovers would be forever joined together. Hawaiian folklore says that if you pluck this flower you are separating the lovers, and that day it will rain.
Photo Story: I took the Pele's Magical Mist photo while I was on a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. A friend of mine who was working at the Kilauea Volcano National Park called me and said "Get over here, a lava tube opened up into the ocean! You need to come take beautiful pictures of the lava flowing into the ocean!" Of course I jumped on a plane and flew to the Big Island that evening. I found a super cute bed & breakfast to stay in at Volcano village. Sadly by the next morning when we were going to head out to the flow, the lave tube to the ocean had already closed off. I had been up before dawn so I headed into the park and was wandering through the rain forest. If you know Volcano, it can get cold. As I was hiking around and laughing because I could see my breath, I noticed the Ohia Lehua trees were blooming on the edge of the steam vents. The flowers are so beautiful. It took a little bit of angling and support (okay I tied a line I had with me around a tree and my waist so I wouldn't tumble off the edge! Safety first!) to get the angle in the landscape for the picture. Doesn't the mist drifting through the Ohia Lehua rain forest create an esoteric otherworldly feeling?
